Top 10 Trends of 2009

"In difficult times fashion is always outrageous" Elsa Schiaparelli

After just about surviving the recession, I couldn't have said it better myself.
This year saw the introduction and return of many ridiculous/amazing trends. If you told me 5 years ago that I would be wearing leggings that looked like jeans, I would have thought that your breakfast had been laced with crack. But here I am, wondering how I ever lived without them!

Here are my top 10 Fads/Trends that have brought joy to my life one way or another... Which is your favourite?

10. Embelishment- This year I have loved all things embellished. Be it sequins, beading or metal studs. If it was on it, I had to have it. My favourites have to be my gold dress from Beacon's closet and of course this Giles AW09 embellished skirt. The fact that I helped to make it may have something to do with it though... ;)

9.Power shoulders - This look was great because it added a bit more drama to what would normally be a simple ensemble. Kate Moss is looking fabulous as usual in Balmain...

8. The Cut off Tee- If you ever needed a reason to go on a diet, this was it! This look had me taking a pair of scissors to almost every t-shirt I owned this summer. It also had me eating less carbs and doing 20 extra sit- ups! Glad that's over...

7. It's like that dream where I realise I'm in my underwear... I was never brave enough for this look, but admired those who were. We have Dior to thank for this one with the AW09 couture collection.

6. Your bic razor, or mine? Although style icons Alice Delall and Kelis sported this look a while back, Rihanna made this look popular with every teen (and grown woman) taking razors to their heads in a bid to look more like the songstress. Not one of my favourite hairstyles but it did provide me with a few giggles.... Oh dear!

5. Jegging, Leggings, Treggings, etc - Being a woman with a *clears throat* rather prominent derriere, one can understand my plight when searching for a good fitting pair of jeans. To put it simply, jeggings/leggings saved my life! That's all...

4. Ankle boots- Love love love ankle boots. enough said.

3. Glue on your face- Nothing has made me chuckle more than the sight of glue on lace front wearers faces! I understand that women want to look like Tyra and Beyonce but really... really? sort it out!

2. All Black Everything- My favourite look of the year. Given our financial status, wearing all black was the best way for us to show how we were in mourning for our once robust bank accounts.

1. Mesh- I get a warm fuzzy feeling inside when I think about mesh. Methinks this is something that is gonna stick around during spring... Mesh = Major! Owww!

All That Glitters...

Those of you that know me will know that me and my clocklace are inseparable. So I guess we can all agree that it was inevitable that I would eventually seek out a gold plated version!
Loving this Kara Ross Clocklace! The 14 -karat gold plated pocket watch comes in either Black or Cafe with enamel on the front and Stingray on the back. Unfortunately the price isn't as pretty, both costing £195! Womp!

While I'm saving my wages for this beauty, I think I will stick to it's cheaper counter part from Urban Outfitter. It may not be gold plated but it's definitely a steal at a recession-proof £26!

Did Someone Say Fierce?

Everyone that has ever had the pleasure of meeting me knows that I love me some Beyonce. So after hearing about our favourite diva's recent detour into Topshop, I had to find out what she purchased.
Well.. it was only the most amazing leggings known to mankind! These fierce black studded leggings are by Icelandic fashion brand E Label and had only just opened it's first concession in the UK when Beyonce decided to snap up a pair.

I've taken the liberty of piecing together the perfect outfit based around these leggings. Call it a homage to our rock chick within!
Happy Spending!

I ♡ Alexander Wang...

Is it just me or is this possibly the best SS10 collection of New York Fashion Week?
I know this blog is about 3 months late but after watching and re- watching this show, I thought what better way to return to my blogging duties than to show everyone why my love for Mr Wang has been rekindled!

Favourite pieces? Well it has to be... erm... everything with a mesh insert! I'm also considering exchanging my first born for a pair of those fierce backless socks!
Enjoy!

How do i look Tyra?

On one of my many trips to Housing Works I was able to pick up a fabulous vintage jacket which I have now decided to wear as a dress. How much was this beauty? $17.95 (£10.85)! Can you imagine my excitement! I put the dress together with a patent Michael Kors belt and Metallic heels from Faith to create a Glam homage to Gloria Gaynor look!I thought that I would share the dress with you via the medium of editorial contortion posses.

I think i may be ready for ANTM...

There is a pot of gold sequins at the end of every rainbow...

So far my time in New York can be summed up in three words:- memorable, magical and rainy! On average it has rained every three days since i got here. But those of you that know me know that a little rain isn't gonna slow me down! Even flash flood warnings couldn't keep me away from vintage shopping and i can confirm that it was definitely worth it! The girls and i took a little trip to the very trendy Williamsburg where we were able to raid Beacons Closet (the most amazing vintage shop second only to Screaming Mimi's). What did i bag? The most amazing sequin dress and a patent Michael Kors belt. Even more amazing was the price- both the belt and the dress were $18.95 each! (That's £11.17 for you guys back home). If anyone is coming to New York anytime soon this is must on your to do list! i dare you, no, i defy you to go into that store any leave with nothing because i promise you, it cannot be done! Anyway, here is the website so you can have a look for yourself: www.beaconscloset.com

Those of you that can't be bothered to go on the website and trust my judgement, Beacon Closet is at 88 North 11 Street between Berry and Whythe. The nearest Station is Bedford Ave which is on the L line.

Before you make your way to Beacons Closet, be sure to check out the Salvation Army across the road from the station. One of the girls picked up an amazing oatmeal coloured blazer a la Stella McCartney for just $9.99 (£5.88)!

With all these amazing outfits to wear, it looks like im going to have to start finding more events to go to.... Hmmm, that sounds like the start of another blog....

Just call me Sophia from The Golden Girls...

Ok. So yesterday i took a little detour on my way back my West Harlem home and found the cutest little vintage shop on 116th between Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard and 8th Ave. The owner is an adorable lady from Long Island and will soon become my surrogate mother! Absolutely love her! The store itself is very tiny but there are a few hidden treasures to be found if you can dedicate 45 minutes to some rummaging. Some of the must haves include a fabulous sequin detail crop top (which would look fierce with some leggings and killer heels), an amazing black doctors bag with gold fastenings and a cute homage to Chanel black and green beaded jacket. As i've put myself on a temporary budget, i allowed myself to only purchase one item. My purchase? An AMAZING embellished sweater (worn as a dress with tight and some serious heels) a la The Golden Girls! Embellished sweaters look like they are set to be my clothing of choice for this autumn, so keep you eyes peeled as i will be buying more of these beauties...

Its not that easy being... orange

Can you imagine my disgust when i entered the Topshop in SoHo only to find that everything is double the price of the UK stores. It's not all bad news though as me and the girls were able to bag a few bargains in the sale. Check out these fabulous heels that we purchased in orange and turquoise for the mama-slapping price of $50! Thats £32 for those of you across the Atlantic! The only problem is handling the aftermath. In the words of Monica Geller-Bing " the person who made these shoes hates feet and wants to see them die!"
As fabulous as they look, they are officially sitting down shoes and come with my own personal health warning of 'WEAR AT YOUR OWN RISK.'
